{{ :computers:truenas:boinc_logo.png?nolink&200|}} ====== BOINC ====== [[https://boinc.berkeley.edu/]] BOINC lets you help cutting-edge science research using your computer. The BOINC app, running on your computer, downloads scientific computing jobs and runs them invisibly in the background. It's easy and safe. Many science projects use BOINC. They investigate diseases, study climate change, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research. {{youtube>tsXxq-o3b9M}} I have used BOINC for a number of years on Linux and Windows platforms. I found it fairly easy to install on FreeBSD (TrueNAS), but there were a few snags, because you have to set up FreeBSD to emulate a Linux OS by changing some configuration settings of the main TrueNAS system. After that, you just need to create a simple Jail to hold the installation of BOINC. I found these web pages very useful : * [[https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/how-to-install-boinc-with-world-community-grid-in-a-freenas-9-3-jail.42738/|TrueNAS HowTo]] * [[https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC|Berkeley HowTo]] (See bottom of page for FreeBSD) --- On 13-Nov-2021 I received the message "[World Community Grid] This project doesn't support computers of type x86_64-pc-freebsd" My BOINC Jail is no longer receiving work units, and there are some completed units waiting in the queue to be uploaded to WCG. I will look into this very soon, maybe using the information at [[https://www.truenas.com/community/threads/how-to-install-boinc-with-world-community-grid-in-a-freenas-9-3-jail.42738/]]
