Preheat oven to Gas 7, 425F 210C.
Sieve the flour and baking powder into a bowl.
Cut up the margarine and rub in.
Stir in the sugar and fruit or cheese.
Add milk and mix with a knife to form a soft dough.
Turn out onto a floured table.
Roll gently to a thickness of 1/2 inch (1.5cm).
Cut into rounds using a metal cutter.
Place on a baking sheet a little apart, and glaze with milk.
Bake on the middle or top shelf for 12-15 minutes.
Cool on a wire tray.
Serve buttered.
